Reimbursement of medical expenses

1. You come to live and work in Belgium

When working in Belgium, you are no longer subject to a foreign social security system. Hence, you are subject to the Belgian social security legislation.

For health care issues, you have to contact one of the Belgian health insurance institutions because they are competent for all aspects related to health insurance.

2. You come to live in Belgium and work abroad

When you come to live in Belgium, you and the members of your family, as residents in Belgium, are entitled to health care in Belgium at the expense of your country of employment. The designation as a member of the family is assessed in regard to the Belgian health insurance legislation.

You are entitled to health services in accordance with the Belgian health insurance legislation.

You have to ask your health insurance institution in your country of employment for the appropriate document and register with a Belgian health insurance institution of your choice by submitting this document.

In case of a temporary stay in your country of employment, you and the members of your family are entitled to health services at the expense of the health insurance of that country.

The health insurance institution of your country of employment remains competent for issuing the European Health Insurance Card.

3. You come to work in Belgium and live abroad

As an insured person subject to the Belgian social security legislation, you and the members of your family, when living abroad, are entitled to health care in your country of residence at the expense of the Belgian health insurance. The designation as a member of the family is assessed in regard to the legislation of the country of residence.

You are entitled to health services in accordance with the health insurance legislation of your country of residence.

In order to be entitled to reimbursement of health care provided in your country of residence, you have to ask your Belgian health insurance institution for the appropriate document and register with a health insurance institution in your country of residence by submitting this document.

In Belgium, you are entitled to health services at the expense of the Belgian health insurance.
