Reimbursement of medical expenses

We advise you to inform your health insurance institution in your country of origin (country of residence) of your intention to come to Belgium to study.

As a student, subject to the social security legislation of a country applying the European Regulations on social security, you continue to be entitled to health care at the expense of the health insurance of the country of origin during your period of study.

You are entitled to health services in accordance with to the Belgian health insurance legislation.

In order to benefit from the reimbursement of the necessary medical care provided in Belgium, you have to ask your European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) from your health insurance institution in your country of origin.

Important to know

In case you transfer your residence to Belgium, you will become subject to the Belgian social security legislation.

With regard to health care, you will consequently no longer be entitled to health care at the expense of the health insurance of the country of origin. You should contact a Belgian health insurance institution which is competent for all matters related to the health insurance.
